As a collectively conceived and executed project, Uses of a Whirlwind: Movement, Movements and Contemporary Radical Currents in the United States came together from concentric circles of activity. Though compiled and edited by three members of the Team Colors Collective, Whirlwinds was also constructed through the tasks and active support of fellow collective member Conor Cash and close friend and comrade, Benjamin Holtzman. The influence of Holtzman and Cash on this project and on us personally cannot possibly be reflected upon in such a small space nor in the printed word.
The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest Press (Marc Herbst, Robby Herbst and Christine Ukle) was among the first to believe in our fledgling research collective and responded by publishing a similarly envisioned online journal entitled In the Middle of a Whirlwind: 2008 Convention Protests, Movement and Movements in May of 2008.
The Icarus Project, Philly’s Pissed / Philly Stands Up (Philadelphia), Jen Angel, Brett Bloom, the anonymous “Smalltown U.S.A. Workers Center,” Emmanuelle Cosse of ACT-UP Paris and Regards (France), Brian Holmes, “I Want to Do This All Day” Audio Documentary Group, SmartMeme, CrimethInc., Daniel McGowan and Ultra-Red (International) all joined Team Colors in the online project, and we very much look forward to working with each of these authors/groups again. Additionally, Jim Fleming and Stevphen Shukaitis of Autonomedia, Maia Ipp of City Lights, and Alexander Dwinell of South End Press deserve special recognition for their early support of the book, as do Joe Biel of Microcosm Publishing and Ramsay Kaanan of PM Press for their advice.
Kate Khatib, our editor at AK Press, has been dedicated to the Whirlwinds project even before it was conceived in book form. Throughout this process she has provided supportive words and useful criticism when necessary to produce the volume you have before you. We also want to acknowledge the important work of the AK Press collective on behalf of this volume and the betterment of radical politics and anarchist literature in general.
No collection of this sort is possible without the tireless efforts of our contributors, preface authors, and interviewees. Each of those included have taken much needed energy away from organizing campaigns, writing projects of their own, and their communities to participate in Whirlwinds and further the circulation of struggles in the United States. We couldn’t be more honored to have them included among these pages.
The contents of the introduction to Whirlwinds were reviewed and greatly improved through the assistance of Chris Dixon, Ryan Fletcher, Farah Fosse, Juliana Hu Pegues, Eric Laursen, Kristyn Leach, Claudia Leung, Lize Mogel, Todd May, Amanda Plumb, Anita Rapone, Tim Sarrantonio, Dvera Saxton, Charles Simpson, Spencer Sunshine, Tracy Serdjenian, Kristian Williams, and Eddie Yuen. While we took much of the brilliant advice offered, we did not take all of it, and any errors in judgment, fact, or argument are entirely our responsibility.

Finally, Craig Hughes would like to express deep thanks to his immediate family and friends, particularly Faline Hughes and Michael Fotis; Stevie Peace thanks his immediate family, friends, and Twin Cities communities, especially Marissa Steen for her gracious support and the crew of local libraries for being so accommodating; Kevin Van Meter appreciates all the time and attention that was lost to his partner Sarah Hughes, their dog Sissy, friends, and family while he was busily huddled over his computer working.
These circles widen to our other friends, colleagues, comrades, and communities, all too numerous to mention; they need not see their names in print to know who they are. But we will mention one: Jodi Tilton. Surrounded by a community of friends who loved her dearly and miss her terribly, she passed into the unknown one July evening in 2007 at the age of twenty-three.
Uses of a Whirlwind: Movement, Movements, and Contemporary Radical Currents in the United States is dedicated to all those who occupy the small, imperceptible moments. For it is their collectivized refusals, transgressions, everyday resistances, inquiries, creative expressions, and desires that will create a new world, one in which many worlds fit.
